Girl Effect is an international non-profit that builds media that girls want, trust and need.
From chat-bots to chat-shows and TV dramas to tech, our content helps adolescent girls in Africa and Asia make choices and changes in their lives. Igniting their confidence to act differently at a time that can define their future.
We create safe spaces for girls, sharing facts, and answering questions about health, nutrition, education, relationships and so much more. To arm girls with the skills to negotiate and redefine what they are told is possible “for a girl”.
Because when a girl unlocks her power to make different choices that change her life, it inspires others to do so too. She starts a ripple effect that impacts her family, her community, her country.
That’s the Girl Effect.

nah this has to be a joke??? this is hugely problematic because there are so many external factors that oppress a girl. this video undermines the disparities that women go through--especially women in poverty.
You dont just change history, you change the course of a girls future
Invest in her dreams invest in her worth, invest in a girl
We watched this in social studies!
I was reading an article about how girls and women are being essentialized and instrumentalized. therefore, framing the issue as an economic one rather than a human rights one. I'm just going to drop an excerpt here, hopefully anyone else watching this will re-thing how tone deaf this is. "...the viewer is invited to 'pretend that you can fix this’ and, as if at the click of a mouse, the GIRL’s ‘burdens’ (FLIES, HUSBAND, BABY) fall away and the process of turning her into a microfinance entrepreneur who in turn banishes her community’s poverty and generates global STABILITY begins" - Kalpana Wilson (2011)
How strong you are...
The irony is that Nike has been among the first to benefit from the exploited and feminized labor force of the South.
I was also very moved when I first viewed this video, and then I found out it was a marketing strategy by Nike and other developers (mobile phones, clothing) to increase their market value in developing countries. According to the Girleffect.org website, it says, "we build youth brands and mobile platforms to empower girls to change their lives", however, this dialogue is a business strategy, it was not intended to actually empower girls or help them achieve economic freedom and equality. Although this campaign has raised awareness of the challenges girls face in developing countries, the ultimate motive was to use girls to sell products and services, not to provide resources to lift them out of poverty. Calkin, S. (2015, Apr). Post-Feminist Spectatorship and the Girl Effect: “Go ahead, really imagine her”. Third World Quarterly. Vol. 36 Issue 4, p654-669. 16p. DOI: 10.1080/01436597.2015.1022525.
We can't even fix our own country where our girls are destined to make 70% of what boys make, where they get no paid maternity leave or guaranteed health care, where our infant mortality rate is pretty much the same as in poor countries... so we're going to give money to other countries supposedly so the girls there can prop themselves up on animal exploitation aka the leading cause of water contamination, heart disease, climate change.. *Facepalm Emojicon
why is my teacher making me watch this
WHAT ABOUT THE BOY AFFECT YOU SEXIST
I am happy the comment section is still open for this. I watched the the Girl Effect video which came later and the comment section was closed down. Bummed me out cos' I know why it was closed down.
So girls are the only future to humanity... I'll have you know boys are suffering way worse, you don't see girls in gangs. You certainly do not see as much girls in prison as there are men. The real issue here is that boys do not have as many groups to help them not slip through the cracks of education in to drugs, poverty, and gangs. Boys need help, just as much as girls. I am not hating on girls or girl organizations. but i don't think this "future" that groups like you are talking about is going to be so great if it is only for girls. the only way to have a good future is for boys and girls to co-exist equally and acknowledge the differences they have to work together for a better tomorrow.
im 11 and a girl, i am already fighting for womens and girls rights. i wish it was illegal to marry someone under 18.

bruh, everyone is just arguing whether or not the video is sexist or whatever. WHAT IS THE NAME OF THE SONG???
What is the name of the song or music?
why not girl boy effect
1) Because girls are the ones left behind in developing countries- they are chosen to fetch for water or learn to cook while boys go to school 2) girls are the ones that are most sexually abused in terms of registered cases 3) if pregnant, their future to support themselves is greatly diminished given that it compromises their ability to study or get a job if having to care for a kid/s and they are mostly left alone with no partner to share the responsibility. 4) Studies have shown repeatedly that when the same amount of money is given to men and women, the women distribute it focusing on family and community, the numbers speak for themselves. In a nutshell.
Billions of billions of dollars have been spent on aid in Africa for years. I don't see that anything has changed. Another propaganda video asking for money.
you're impatient. Do some research and find out if Africa is getting better. I think it is. There's a growing middle class and less civil wars (although it may not seem like, these used to be worse)
Poverty in sub Saharan Africa has been cut in half since the 90’s
I wish I could do more to help this amazing organisation make this a reality
As per the UN, at least 1 in 3 women is beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused by an intimate partner in her lifetime. One in 5 women will become a victim of rape or attempted rape in her lifetime. It has been shown that an educated girl will reinvest 90 per cent of her future income in her family, compared with 35 per cent for a boy.
Oh feminists... They never fail to give me a good laugh
actually this is not feminism, feminism now is not talking about 'investing' to a girl so that she can change the economy. Feminists are mostly talking about the 'human rights' need. We need gender equality not because she can earn money and change the world in the end (and obviously this is not a logical causation), but she is a person. So this video and this pragmatic approach (also promoted by the World Bank) are actually the things they stand against.
I wish it was this simple but educating women in developing countries is not going to solve the problem here. There are many other economic/sexist/racist/classist systems at work and simply giving poor women a better education is not going to fix these problems. If it did, developed nations would not still be plagued with them.
Best do nothing then
I don't get why it isn't called the "caring" effect in stead of the girl effect. Anybody who gives a damn can do this. Maybe its just to bring attention, who knows.

Amazing!
A lot of people are getting very upset about this not being about boys, too. When there is a video about African American rights do people get upset that it doesn't include white people? Seriously. Also, this is a SPECIFIC organization that focuses SPECIFICALLY on women. There are organizations that focus on just children living in poverty. Does anyone complain about it not including adults? I didn't think so. I also think people don't understand that gender equality and feminism benefits men as well.
Feminism has not helped anyone and is just a problem
I wish people would respect girls like the girl in this video and girls like me then we will have a chance and we can change the world and not by wearing lipstick and strutting around half dead just to be approved of in modern society.
Begone
You are an inspiration.
If you don't like this effect or the video itself then just leave the page, don't leave a rude comment. Try walking in the shoes of one these girls and tell me how happy your life is then.
She is such a pretty girl and its a shame to see that this happened to a gem :( It shouldn't happen at all
I haft to do this for school and this is a fucking dumb video.
Says the one who just said 'haft'.......
JustCallMe Alli Yes because my use of haft really matters, go fuck youself Alli.
'Haft' isn't a word, you moronic giz bag and you're saying that THIS is dumb? Wow.
JustCallMe Alli Yes because one grammatical mistake someone makes is a way to determine their intelligence my spelling may be bad, but your logic is broken.
My logic is that this video is dumb, that this organisation is amazing and YOU'RE dumb if you think this is.
This video is ridiculous.. Invest in a girl and expect all that? You could invest in ANYONE and expect that. Just because it's a girl doesn't make it a end all cure all.. Besides, you don't think investments like these haven't already happened? I don't see the world becoming better just because a girl manages to get a cow, get real.
The world has changed for the better. The more organisations like this, the better. I went to Thailand when I was younger and there were very few people living on the streets. If you went there even 10 years ago there would probably be thousands. It's saying that one girl you invested in can convince others to do that same, because she knows what it's like. Then those people invest in another girl and so on and so forth.
Educating, empowering, and investing in the wellbeing of young women in developing countries is the fastest way to inject WORLDWIDE change for the better. You are speaking from a very narrow mindset. You should get real and stop striking out at videos on the internet. Do something good for the world.
in most developing countries, yes you can expect all that by investing in a girl
annnnnnd im crying...
I love this video and the other girl effect video!
What program was used to create this video?
Most likely this was done in Adobe After Effects. The other Girl Effect video with the actual girl character was done in a program like Maya/Cinema 4D/Blender(free). You can tell because she is not just a 2d shape, but she has some volume as she spins.
yes because the answer to the success of the developing world is a loosely based multitude of factors, resulting in a generation of succesful cow herders across the developing world...hmmm i'm not so sure
Educating women and giving them a better future is PROVEN yes PROVEN to drastically improve a whole country's economy so yes this does help a whole lot

Bravo.
every time my hair stands on end when I see this. Very powerful video!
empowering girls has always been the solution to ending poverty or at least improving the lives of people around her. That is why, men, being the creatures that they are, enslaved them for thousands of years. That's important if you want to control others and rule the world. Power and greed keep guys on top. You do that by controlling women. Modern economies are modern because they have different attitudes towards a woman. Read.
Pretty much.
Power comes from within, not from someone else giving it to you. Girls have power anyway, they are being defined as powerless which takes away from their image any power and empowers the one defining them. This girl effect is only defining Third World women and girls as powerless people who need to be empowered by others who don't really know anything about them, it's just based on a series of assumptions (assumptions about their poverty and assumptions about the solutions that only others can apparently offer). There are girls and women in this situation, but not all. Also, the video is very problematic because it defines boys and men as pests and problems that infringe the progress of women, this they are not. Controlling others and ruling the world happens in many different ways and one of the ways it is done is by producing a dichotomy between 'you' and the 'other' and defining your people as great, powerful and knowledgeable, and the others as powerless and in need of saving from their environment and their people. That is how i see the video. 'Modern economies' are only 'modern' because of the exploitation and labour they get from the Third World and their own people. Also, i don't believe that modern economies are modern in that sense of the word at all. They are modern in that they are the economies of the day. I'm sure you wouldn't say that other countries with different economic orders are backwards.
I think this is one of the dumbest comments I've ever seen
Touchy, especially the music. <3
I have some GCSE work to do; anyone know what program could be used to make videos like this please? :)
WHAT PROGRAM IS USED TO CREATE THIS VIDEO?? ANYONE PLEASE LET ME KNOW
